(RepublicanNews.org) – The omnibus spending bill released in the early morning Tuesday, which needs to be passed by Friday, 23rd December, to keep the government funded, has had a rocky journey through the legislature. Rand Paul objected to the massive size of the bill, which at 4155 pages was far too long to read before being expected to vote on it. One could speculate that Congress does this somewhat intentionally; if the bill has to be passed in a last-minute rush to keep the government running, it makes it easier to get away with adding earmarks for pet projects.
The bill contains many earmarks which might well not be funded if they could be subjected to proper scrutiny. Rep. Chip Roy tweeted Thursday about the bill funneling millions of dollars to LGBTQ groups, which he accused of “peddling radical gender ideology.”
There is a grant of $2 million to the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum in Baltimore, $1 million funding for Zora’s House, a community space “for women and gender expansive people of color.” Over $3.6 million goes to Georgia for their “Michelle Obama Trail” and $3 million for bee-friendly highways.
$575 million is earmarked for family planning, particularly in areas where human population growth may affect biodiversity or endangered species. Rep. Dan Bishop pointed out that this could be taken as an attempt to prevent population growth and described the policy in a tweet as “Malthusianism.”
The bill appears to be unpopular with the public if Twitter users are representatives. Elon Musk tweeted a poll on December 20th, asking if congress should approve the bill. The result was 71% against, with many highly negative comments. Musk himself tweeted that railroading the bill through at the last minute was “unlikely to be in the best interests of the people.”
