(RepublicanNews.org) – Fed up with the harsh realities accompanying Cuba’s long-standing Communist regime, Cubans launched the largest anti-government protests staged on the island nation in decades. The Biden administration begrudgingly admitted Communism is a failed form of government, but Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) apparently disagrees.
On July 15, Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) posted a statement on her Twitter page regarding the Cuban protests. She bashed Cuba’s Communist President Miguel Díaz-Canel, but she saved most of her wrath for the United States. According to her, America’s 60-year-old trade embargo on Cuba was the source of the Cuban people’s suffering. She also demanded the Biden administration lift the embargo, calling it cruel.
As one might expect, her remarks didn’t sit well with Republican lawmakers. However, it also drew the ire of some current and former Democratic lawmakers. For example, former Florida Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell posted a fiery rebuke to AOC’s post.
No. This is not correct.
It’s the failed policies of a communist regime that has violated human rights, imprisoned & killed dissidents.
Cuban ppl -young & old- are risking their lives to rise up, we must listen to them.
This is a matter of national security.
The US must act. https://t.co/Wne0crVV8w— Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (@DebbieforFL) July 16, 2021
Mucarsel-Powell blamed Cuba’s woes on the “failed policies of [its] communist regime.” She also pointed out the Cuban government routinely committed human rights violations and “imprisoned & killed” political rivals. She ended her post calling on the US to act in the interest of “national security.”
Sadly, AOC’s anti-American sentiment is nothing new, nor is her embrace of Socialist and Communist regimes. However, it’s particularly hurtful considering the fact scores of Cubans are missing, and at least one person is dead due to the protests.
