Attempted Burglary Ends in Tragic Shooting Death

( – A child and a grandmother bore witness to a shooting inside a Los Angeles home when the owner killed a suspected burglar in the early hours of Saturday, December 2nd.

Emergency services were called to the Granada Hills home at around 5 a.m. after a reported shooting inside the residence. The homeowner, who confronted the suspected group of three to four unknown men, told the Los Angeles Police Department that they were wearing “dark clothing, hoodies and masks” when the burglary occurred.

The LAPD wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that a suspected burglar pointed a weapon at the homeowner while others searched the residence. At that point, the victim “produced a firearm” and mortally wounded the suspect. The remaining suspects were chased out of the house on foot, leaving behind the black BMW sedan they used to drive to the scene.

One suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, while a second was believed to be injured while fleeing the scene after authorities spotted a trail of blood at the home.

A toddler and a grandmother were inside the home at the time of the burglary, along with the homeowner. After initially being taken to Devonshire Community Police Station, the homeowner, who was initially photographed in handcuffs outside his property, was later released following questioning.

Neighboring residents said they were “not surprised at all” by the attempted burglary, adding that similar incidents had been occurring “every day in this neighborhood”. Neighbor Pat Walsh told KTLA that many were “fed up” with the repeated thefts.

The slain suspect was determined to have suffered two gunshot wounds, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s investigators. He was also found in possession of property belonging to the homeowner. His identity has not been released.

Crime in Los Angeles has risen since the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, there were a reported 229,584 crimes, marking an 11.6% increase compared to the previous year.
