(RepublicanNews.org) – A letter from Roberta Laundrie to her son Brian, who murdered his fiancĂ©e Gabby Petito in 2021, is being sensationalized and used to accuse her of knowledge of her son’s murder, according to Roberta Laundrie.
Brian Laundrie, then-23, and his girlfriend Gabby Petito, 22, went on a cross-country road trip in the early summer of 2021. Petito’s body was later found close to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. Brian Laundrie then went to his mother’s Florida home while investigators were seeking him.
Police discovered Laundrie’s body in Florida in October 2021, after he took his own life.
The letter Roberta Laundrie wrote to her son Brian contained melodramatic pledges of love and loyalty, and Gabby Petito’s parents and attorney say it indicates Roberta knew her son had killed Petito. The Petitos have filed a civil suit against the Laundries for emotional distress after their daughter’s killing.
In the letter, Roberta Laundrie told her son she would always love him and that she would do almost anything to help him. If he were jailed, she wrote, she would bake him a cake with a nail file in it. If he needed to dispose of a dead body, the letter continued, “I will show up with a shovel and garbage bags.”
But the lawyer representing the Petitos, Pat Reilly, says Roberta Laundrie’s letter shows that she wrote it after her son murdered Petito and it proves that Chris and Roberta Laundrie knew their son was responsible.
The letter became public as part of the Petitos’s civil suit against the Laundries.
Through her lawyer, Roberta Laundrie she said she wrote her letter to Brian Laundrie before he and Gabby Petito hit the road in 2021. She said her passionate language and pledge to help her son were just the ordinary expressions of deep love that parents have for their children.
The civil suit against Chris and Roberta Laundrie is ongoing.
