Death Toll Continues to Skyrocket, Mayor Silent

( – Americans have focused much of their attention on the social unrest that’s plagued the country the last few months in the wake of George Floyd’s death in May 2020. At the same time, much of the country has overlooked long-term problems in cities like Chicago.

For instance, the ABC 7 Chicago affiliate reported that two people were killed and at least 21 others were wounded in the “Windy City” over the weekend beginning on Friday, February 5.

Another 21 individuals were shot in Chicago the previous weekend, 5 fatally. Gun violence is nothing new to Chicago, with the Chicago Police Department reporting a total of 201 shooting incidents in the first month of 2021. That figure represents an increase of nearly 47% from January 2020.

The number of murders also increased by 46%, with 51 recorded by the Chicago PD this January compared to 35 in January 2020. Motor vehicle theft rose by 27%, with 851 incidents in January 2021, there were 671 in the same period of 2020. Citywide robberies increased by about 1%.

The question is where is Mayor Lori Lightfoot? She’s been radio silent as the violence has overtaken her city. Not exactly what you expect from a leader.

Donald Trump sent federal officers to Democrat-run cities like Chicago last year to reduce violent crime. Perhaps it’s time for the Biden administration to renew that effort.
