Democratic Governor Faces Recall Amid Certification

( – Tensions remain high across the nation in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The US has reported nearly 32 million cases of infections and more than 560,000 total deaths. Several states have endured unimaginable economic hardships due to quarantines and other restrictions, particularly at the direction of Democratic governors. One state is fighting back in a big way.

On April 26, California’s Secretary of State, Shirley Weber, announced that her office verified more than 1.6 million of the nearly 1.5 million required signatures to trigger a recall election for the State’s Democratic Gov., Gavin Newsom. Republicans led a state-wide effort to unseat him due to his mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The date of the actual recall remains unclear. Several phases in the process remain. For instance, the signature count won’t become final until June 8. Then, after a couple of hurdles, Lieutenant Gov. Eleni Kounalakis (D) will schedule the recall election.

So far, six Republicans have announced their intentions to run against Newsom to include former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and former Olympic champion Caitlyn Jenner. So far, no Democrats have entered the race.
