Democrats Target Secretary Pompeo

Democrats Target Secretary Pompeo

( – A group of House Democrats launched an attack on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a possible attempt to derail efforts to reelect President Trump.

Representative Eliot Engel (D-NY), Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, announced his committee would work on a resolution to hold Sec. Pompeo in contempt.

Engel’s August 28, 2020, announcement stated that Pompeo’s “ongoing refusal” to comply with committee subpoenas prompted the decision to initiate contempt proceedings against the secretary.

The alleged controversy revolves around two subpoenas, one issued in September 2019 seeking State Department records related to the impeachment inquiries conducted by three different committees.

The second subpoena, issued on July 31, 2020, sought documents related to Pompeo’s alleged misuse of Department resources.

However, by Engel’s admission, the State Department turned over more than 16,000 pages of documents to two Senate committees so far, and efforts continue to gather additional information.

Questions regarding the legitimacy of Engel’s efforts and his committee have arisen in light of this admission.

Is There an Ulterior Motive to Engel’s Announcement?

A quick review of Engel’s announcement sheds possible light on his true intentions regarding the effort to hold Pompeo in contempt.

For example, Engel complained about Pompeo’s “willingness” to support an ongoing Senate-led investigation into Joe Biden’s Ukraine involvement during his tenure with the Obama administration.

Engel characterized that inquiry as an investigation into a “conspiracy theory that’s been debunked again and again.”

Likewise, Engel criticized Pompeo’s speech during the 2020 Republican National Convention. According to Engal, Pompeo used the event to “bolster” a smear campaign against President Trump’s political rivals.

A State Department spokesman called Engel’s announcement “political theatrics,” adding that the department merely asked Engel to explain why he needed the documents.

Although Engel’s real intention remains unclear, one thing remains certain — Americans won’t need to concern themselves with him after January 2021.

Engel lost his June 2020 primary despite (or perhaps due to) securing last-minute endorsements from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and failed 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
