Joe Biden Wants Investigation Into Miami Building Collapse

( – A 12-story oceanfront condominium tower abruptly and violently collapsed, wiping out 55 units in seconds on Thursday, June 24 in Surfside, Florida. Rescue efforts began shortly after the 1:23 a.m. collapse, and more than 150 were declared missing within hours of the collapse.

On June 28, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki confirmed that President Joe Biden believed there should be an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the condominium’s collapse.

Asked whether Biden believed the federal government had a role in an investigation, Psaki answered in the affirmative. She explained that officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) already had assets on the scene, including construction experts and officials from the FBI, National Institutes of Standards and Technology, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

The administration deployed those officials to help participate in rescue efforts and provide expertise to assess possible reasons for the building’s abrupt collapse.

Continuing, Psaki confirmed the administration wanted to “play any constructive role [it] can” assisting with any investigation and making sure a similar event won’t happen in the future. “The goal,” she explained, is “to get to the bottom of what happened” in hopes lessons learned can serve as “an instructive guide” to help prevent another collapse in the future.

Rescue efforts are ongoing. Biden visited the site on Thursday and vowed to provide 100% of the costs for the first 30 days of the recovery efforts.
