John Kerry Wants Biden to Soften Position on China

( – Former Senator John Kerry (D) is a long-time ally of President Joe Biden. Serving as the president’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, he’s busier than ever juggling multiple tasks. Now, he’s taken on the job of asking Biden to soften his position on a critical foreign policy.

After trying and failing to convince China to commit to climate change, Kerry is asking Biden to walk back his firm stance on the country’s carbon emissions. The senator says strained relations between America and the foreign nation will make it difficult, if not impossible, to convince them to commit to enacting change.

Senator Kerry says direct diplomacy measures between the US President and Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader Xi Jinping must occur in order to move forward. The two leaders spoke at length back in September, when they shared a 1.5-hour telephone call. While Biden has loosened up on a small number of issues related to China, he maintains a hard stance on human rights and Taiwan’s independence.

Special Envoy Kerry continues to attempt to work out a deal with China, prompting rising tensions in the White House. Jake Sullivan, Biden’s national security advisor, backs the president’s approach; he doesn’t trust China to make good on its promises.
