( – Democrats continue to express concern regarding recent revelations the Department of Justice (DOJ) opened a secret investigation into about a dozen House Intelligence Committee members between 2017 and 2018. DOJ officials initiated the probe as part of an effort to uncover the source(s) of classified leaks believed to have originated from Congress.

Democratic lawmakers have threatened to subpoena former Trump-era attorneys general Jeff Session and William Barr in response to that news. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) called out that effort by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and other Democrats on the Senate floor on Monday, June 14.

As McConnell explained, Democratic efforts to look into the matter are “politically motivated investigations,” in effect, a partisan-led power grab. He also pointed out that it is particularly concerning that Democrats are targeting Barr for investigations that pre-dated his time as attorney general.

“These latest attempts to tarnish [Barr’s] name bear the tell-tale signs of a witch hunt in the making,” McConnell said.

The DOJ’s Inspector General is currently investigating the matter and is “fully equipped” to uncover any improper behavior on the part of DOJ officials, if any exists. McConnell said there’s no need for a “partisan circus here in Congress.”

As McConnell concluded, the DOJ is empowered to investigate allegations of misconduct by Congressional members and their staff and is subject to “strict procedural protections.”
