Nurse DoorDash Driver Carjacked by 11-Year-Old at Gunpoint

( – An 11-year-old boy is accused of carjacking Deion Smith, 40, a DoorDash delivery driver in Richmond, Virginia. The unnamed boy and Jahlia Henley, his 18-year-old accomplice, are under arrest after crashing the stolen car in Henrico County outside of Richmond. Both were hospitalized for minor injuries following the crash.

The female DoorDash driver reports initially believing the child wanted “money or something,” and was surprised when he brandished a firearm and demanded her car keys, telling her he would shoot her if she did not comply. She referred to the two assailants as “kids” before they approached her.

The incident occurred after midnight on November 30th in South Richmond, while Smith was making a food delivery to an apartment complex. Henley allegedly jumped in the driver’s seat while she was talking with the 11-year-old and told Smith to get into the car, but she refused. She immediately called the police and was informed an hour later that her car had been discovered at the scene of the crash.

The two assailants have been charged with the commission of a felony while in possession of a firearm, as well as carjacking, which carries a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 3 years for the first offense.

In addition to driving for DoorDash, Smith also works as an RN home health care nurse and has a 10-year-old daughter she’s raising by herself. After learning that her car was totaled in the crash, leaving her without transportation to get to work, relatives of her patients have set up a GoFundMe on Smith’s behalf to raise funds to pay for her transportation. She reportedly had very recently paid off her car entirely.

DoorDash officials made a statement, emphasizing their dedication to “Helping Dashers feel safe,” and reminding the public that the DoorDash Trust and Safety team is available 24 hours a day to help their drivers and the public in emergencies.

Smith reports she feels grateful to have survived the encounter, and says, “A car can be replaced.”
