(RepublicanNews.org) – With about 5,400 employees, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BSO) is Florida’s largest sheriff’s department and one of the nation’s largest. In addition to routine road patrol services, the department also provides fire rescue services, child protective service investigations and administers four pretrial detention facilities.
On December 1, the BSO released a statement detailing the successful conclusion of Operation Green Shield, a proactive effort by the department to reduce violent crime — gang-related shootings in particular. The BSO also posted a press conference about the operation’s success on its YouTube page.
According to Carey Codd, the Senior Public Information Officer for BSO, the operation resulted in 54 arrests on felony charges, including 22 gang members. Additionally, officers seized nearly 5 pounds of heroin, about 8 ounces of cocaine and 4 ounces of fentanyl, along with almost $360,000 of illicit cash.
Operation Green Shield was conducted from October 26 to November 16 and utilized several divisions within the BSO along with agents from the Department of Homeland Security, the US Marshals Service, and other federal agencies.
As Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony stated, the entire county is safer after the arrest of dozens of violent criminals and the seizure of guns and drugs.
