(RepublicanNews.org) – President Joe Biden continues to tease the possibility of a second run for the White House as polls show fewer and fewer Americans enthusiastic about him.
An NBC News poll from April 23 found that 70% of those surveyed do not think Joe Biden should run for office. The same poll found that 60% did not want Donald Trump to run again. While Trump announced his re-election bid months ago, Biden has yet to do so formally.
On Sunday’s ‘Meet the Press,’ Senate majority whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) said much could change between now and the 2024 campaign despite what polls today indicate. It is 19 months before the election, he said, and “most people make their decision on the candidate 19 days before the election.”
Durbin gave a positive appraisal of Biden’s record, giving him high marks on his handling of Ukraine and what he said was Biden’s fostering of a relationship with China. Durbin also pointed out Biden’s support of abortion rights, a perennially hot issue but even more so since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in 2022.
Roe v Wade was a 1973 Supreme Court decision that stopped states from banning abortion in the first trimester. When the precedent was overruled last year, full control of abortion regulation returned to the states.
The NBC poll also showed 58% of respondents wanted to protect abortion rights in most cases. Republican states have been increasingly restricting or banning abortion since Roe was overturned.
As much as polls can reveal public sentiment, they can also reveal voter confusion, inconsistency, or uncertainty. While the NBC news poll showed greater support for Trump than for Biden, the majority polled were not enthusiastic about another Trump-Biden match-up.
Trump has a double-digit lead over his likely Republican challenger, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis has not announced a presidential run but is widely expected to do so.
