Rep Tlaib Profits off Rental Property

( – Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) has been pushing a bill to cancel rent payments. She promoted the measure as a means of helping working-class Americans. Although the measure might sound good on paper, it appears that Tlaib hasn’t been honest about her possible motive for promoting the measure.

In March, Tlaib announced she was joining Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) in an upcoming press conference to discuss the Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act. If passed, it would create a “nationwide” moratorium on rent and home mortgage payments for the “duration” of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, her recent financial disclosures reveal a darker, more personal reason for her promotion of the measure. Filed on August 13, those documents revealed that Tlaib received between $15,001 and $50,000 in rental income in 2020. Her 2019 filings showed the same income range on her Detroit properties, valued at $100,001 to $250,000.

It appears that Tlaib has an obvious conflict of interest when promoting the cancellation of mortgage payments. Tlaib likes to promote herself as a champion of the people. However, one must wonder whether she’s only promoting the cancellation of rent and mortgage payments to protect her own interests.

Additionally, some Republican lawmakers have expressed growing concerns that incentives like the Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act could inspire Americans to stay at home instead of returning to work.
