Republicans Seek To Bar States From Funding Health Insurance for Illegal Migrants

GOP Lawmakers Make A Bold Proposal To Protect Tax Payers

(RepublicanNews.org) – While President Biden is seemingly trying to make the lives of illegal immigrants comfortable, Republicans are putting America first. GOP members of the House of Representatives recently introduced a bill that would block states from funding health care programs for undocumented individuals with federal pass-through dollars. The legislation comes not long after President Biden approved Colorado’s request to spend federal money to create health care services that illegal immigrants can utilize.

Section 1332

Under the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) Section 1332, Colorado will receive a massive $1.9 trillion from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) over the course of five years to fund the health care exchanges.

The Daily Caller shared Colorado’s HHS application in an exclusive report. It explains that the exchanges aim to provide undocumented individuals with medical insurance. However, not everyone in The Centennial State was happy with the move.

US Representative Ken Buck (R-CO) introduced the “No Federal Tax Dollars for Illegal Aliens Health Insurance Act of 2022,” which would amend Section 1332 of the ACA and block states from using pass-through funds to pay for undocumented individuals’ health care. Representatives Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Doug Lamborn (R-CO) co-sponsored Buck’s bill.

The ACA

In 2010, then-President Barack Obama signed the ACA into law. Under the bill, the federal government couldn’t subsidize health care for illegal immigrants. Several Republicans expressed worry during the debates before the passage of the ACA that it would be used to fund health care for these individuals.

During his 2009 State of the Union Address, Obama claimed the ACA wouldn’t fund subsidies to anyone in the US illegally. That prompted Representative Joe Wilson to yell, “you lie.”

Fast forward to present day America: Section 1332 does offer a loophole as there is nothing within its text about prohibiting the use of pass-through money to fund the programs. Buck wants to close that ambiguity.

Buck’s Blockade

Buck told the Daily Caller that Section 1332 gives states waivers, allowing them to implement modern health care services. But instead of using them properly, Democrats are using them as a loophole to provide undocumented individuals with health care on taxpayers’ dime. The representative called that a “slap in the face” for citizens who get up and go to work every day while struggling to survive the current “9.1% Biden-flation.” Buck is demanding that the government put the needs of Americans first. Don’t the people of this country deserve more?
