Parkland Families React To Killer Nikolas Cruz Sentencing
(RepublicanNews.org) – Nikolas Cruz was only 19 years old when he went on a rampage on Valentine’s Day 2018. The teen used an AR-15 to massacre 17 people, including 14 students and three teachers, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He pleaded guilty to all offenses. The gunman received a life sentence after the Florida jury was unable to come to a unanimous decision to have him executed. The sentencing shocked the families of the massacre’s victims, many of whom were angry over the jury’s failure to sentence Cruz to death.

Elizabeth Scherer, the Broward County Circuit Judge presiding over Cruz’s case, sentenced the gunman to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Scherer asserted the shooter would serve 34 sentences consecutively, one for each of the 17 counts of murder and 17 counts of attempted murder. The judge, who commended the victims’ families for being patient and graceful throughout the trial, handed down the sentencing after two days of impact statements from the families of those Cruz killed.
Theresa Robinovitz, the grandmother of Alyssa Alhadeff, explained she was too old to see the shooter live out the rest of his life in prison, adding her hope that every waking moment of his life was full of misery and that he would spend eternity burning in Hell. Her husband, David Robinovitz, mirrored her feelings.
Victim Meghan Petty’s 14-year-old surviving sister expressed the situation has brought her to her physical, emotional, and mental breaking points. The teen explained that she would feel that way for the rest her life after Cruz escaped the death penalty, noting “life” was something her sister wouldn’t have the luxury of enjoying.
Widow Debra Hixon, who was married to Chris Hixon, made it clear to Cruz that her family wouldn’t allow him to bring them any further suffering. She added that they would survive and thrive instead as they honored the people’s lives he took.
