(RepublicanNews.org) – Senators on both sides of the aisle are frustrated waiting to find out what’s contained in classified documents discovered at the homes of both President Biden and former President Donald Trump.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) responded to the Senate Intelligence Committee with a letter stating the DOJ was trying to get lawmakers the information they wanted “without harming the ongoing Special Counsel Investigation.”
That Special Counsel Investigation refers to the DOJ’s probing of President Biden’s handling of classified documents. Lawyers working for the President discovered papers marked “classified” in President Biden’s home garage in Delaware and at his Biden-Penn think tank in D.C.
Earlier this week, former Vice-President Mike Pence delivered classified documents to the National Archives, which he said he found in his Illinois home.
The investigation into Biden is markedly calmer and more delicate than the treatment given to former President Trump. Despite the fact that Trump cooperated with the DOJ investigation into his cache of documents, the FBI launched a full raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Florida in September 2022.
Democrat Mark Warner of Virginia chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, while Republican Marco Rubio of Florida serves as Vice Chair. Both senators are calling for the right to see the actual documents themselves, a request Rubio repeated on CBS’s Face the Nation on January 29.
Rubio said he believed many of the documents were of a type that senators already have legal access to but that they didn’t know which documents to focus on without more detail.
The request was “not about being nosy,” Rubio said. It’s the Intelligence Committee’s job to oversee such document handling, he said.
Committee chairman Warner said committee members have a right to “view virtually every” classified document.
Members of the Committee also threatened to withhold budget money for the federal agencies involved if they didn’t cooperate with Committee requests.
