(RepublicanNews.org) – The saga of classified documents in the possession of former President Donald Trump continues with lawyers for the government and Trump tussling over a classified document.
An audio recording of Trump surfaced recently in which he referred to keeping a classified document relating to a potential attack on Iran. Trump’s lawyers say they cannot find this document now, and it is not clear whether the Department of Justice (DOJ) or the FBI may have a copy of it.
In an unprecedented move in June 2022, the FBI launched a full raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Florida in search of classified papers. The extreme treatment contrasts with the way the Biden administration has cordially cooperated with President Biden and his lawyers, allowing Biden’s lawyers to turn over the classified documents Biden kept in his home garage in Delaware.
Former Trump Vice President Mike Pence also returned to the government classified papers he had at his Indiana home.
Federal prosecutors have been seeking all documents relating to Trump’s former head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, documents relating to Iran, and any papers describing invasion plans.
In a subpoena issued to Trump earlier this year, these prosecutors asked specifically for the papers relating to Iran that Trump was heard to refer to on the audio recording. But Trump’s lawyers say they cannot locate these documents.
Federal investigators are suspicious that the Trump team may not have turned over all the classified documents that the federal government believes Trump has. Last year, the special counsel in charge of the investigation told a federal judge that they were not certain Trump had returned all the secret documents, even after the FBI raided his Florida home.
Trump’s legal team said they did not review the classified documents that were in the boxes Trump returned to the National Archives. They also say the FBI has not told Trump what it found within the boxes and folders the agency seized from his home last year.
