(RepublicanNews.org) – In July, a group of more than 50 Texas lawmakers fled the state to break quorum on a vote in the Texas House to pass HB1, a new election bill. They hoped to stall the measure long enough for the passage of the For the People Act, the Democratic-led federal voting rights bill. However, Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) threw a wrench in those plans.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) attempted to force the bill through the Senate using unanimous consent in the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 11. However, at about 4:30 a.m. EST, Cruz stood up and objected to the bill, effectively killing it for the time being. All it took was one objection, and Cruz appeared more than happy to take that step to protect the states’ rights to run their own elections free from federal control.

Cruz explained his rationale for killing the measure during a 15-minute floor speech. As he explained, the bill’s passage would “disenfranchise millions of Americans” by striking down “virtually every… voter integrity law” nationwide.
It would also block voter ID laws, he continued, as well as restrictions on ballot harvesting. In addition, the passage of the For the People Act would restore voting rights to felons and would “automatically register millions of illegal aliens.”
Cruz concluded his remarks by warning that passage of the Democratic-led bill would profoundly undermine American democracy, and “for that reason, I object.”
