Thanks to COVID, Shopping Local More Important Than Ever

( – The holiday season is upon us, and for many, that means it’s time to start working on shopping lists. In the wake of the economic destruction created by the COVID-19 pandemic, shoppers might consider bypassing national chains and online retailers like Amazon. Instead, the 2020 holiday season provides a perfect opportunity to support local businesses.

Communities and agencies like Oregon’s Tourism Commission have turned to Twitter and other sources to post shopping guides and promote local businesses.

The Small Business Administration reported that almost 30 million small businesses operated in the US, employing roughly two-thirds of the country’s workers, before the pandemic. Supporting local businesses for the holidays helps out struggling business owners and their employees. Additionally, there’s a ripple effect in communities where those owners and workers spend their earnings on other local businesses.

It can be easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless in the face of problems created by the coronavirus as the country heads into winter. However, individuals and families can help their communities by spending money locally.
