(RepublicanNews.org) – In a move certain to provoke critics who see the United Nations as posing an ever-growing threat to the sovereignty of member countries, the UN has called for an immediate phasing out of fossil fuels.
Even if nations were willing to do so, it is not realistic or possible to immediately end the use of fossil fuels and convert to “clean energy.” Practicality has not slowed the UN’s fervor, however.
The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a report on March 21st that reads like the trailer script for a post-apocalyptic disaster movie. Calling its work a “survival guide for humanity,” the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres released a video message the same day promoting it.
In this video, Guterres said a “climate time bomb is ticking,” and that the world needs to heed the IPCC report. Concentrations of carbon dioxide are “at their highest level in at least 2 million years,” he said, and the UN report is a “how-to guide” to “defuse” that “bomb.”
As has become common from national and world governing bodies, Guterres’ tone and language were emotional and melodramatic and used very contemporary lingo and pop culture references. He called the report a “clarion call to massively fast-track climate efforts” by every single country and every single sector. The world, he said, needs action against climate change “everywhere, all the time.”
The UN report said every increment of global temperature rise will create “rapidly escalating hazards,” such as intense heat waves, heavy rainfall, rising ocean levels, and all manner of extreme risks to human, animal, and plant life.
Using the currently favored euphemism for famine and hunger, the document also said “food insecurity” will get worse, and that pandemics will be harder to get through.
At the UN’s last climate conference in November 2022, member nations committed billions more dollars for “climate financing” for third-world countries (which they call ‘developing’), and urged private investors to provide more financing toward this cause.
