New US Capitol Report Made Public After Investigation

(UnitedVoice.com) – In the days after the January 6 violence on Capitol Hill, a bipartisan group of senators began an investigation into what happened. Their probe mainly focused on the failures of federal and local law enforcement in the weeks leading up to the incident. On June 8, lawmakers on the Senate Rules Committee and the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee released their report on the incident.

Senators Rob Portman (R-OH), Gary Peters (D-MI), Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) outlined multiple failures by law enforcement. Homeland Security and the FBI failed to adequately warn the proper agencies of the threats of violence. The Capitol Police reportedly had information two weeks before January 6 about an armed group of people preparing to go to Washington, DC.

The senators recommended the National Guard and chief of the Capitol Police make sure there’s an open line of communication going forward. Also, they said the officers protecting lawmakers should engage in joint training exercises with local, state and federal entities. Finally, the senators said the Capitol Police Intelligence Bureau should pay special attention to social media posts and make sure its employees are properly trained.
