(RepublicanNews.org) – Former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming slammed the former chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC), Ronna McDaniel, for flip-flopping on her position toward the riots at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., on January 6th, 2021.
One of former President Donald Trump’s campaign promises is that he will free all of the Jan. 6 defendants still in prison, whom he referred to as “hostages.” Trump vowed this would be one of his first acts as president once he retakes the White House.
On Sunday, March 24th, McDaniel appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” and during her conversation with host Kristen Welker, she told Welker that she disagreed with Trump’s promise to pardon the Jan. 6th rioters. Welker replied by questioning why McDaniel hadn’t spoken out about her position earlier when Trump had been making that promise “for months.”
McDaniel replied that as the RNC chair, she had to “take one for the whole team,” adding that she can now “be a little bit more” herself while no longer serving in that role. She stepped down from her position as RNC chair at the end of February after Trump pulled away last year and refused to endorse her, even though she was an open supporter of the former president’s questions about voter fraud after the 2020 presidential election.
Soon after McDaniel’s remarks on “Meet the Press,” Cheney responded on social media and claimed the ex-RNC chair helped to facilitate the former president’s “corrupt fake elector plot” and efforts “to pressure” officials to refrain from certifying a “legitimate election outcome.” Cheney also accused McDaniel of spreading Trump’s “lies” and framing the events of Jan. 6th as “legitimate political discourse.”
Cheney said McDaniel’s actions were not “taking one for the team,” but instead enabled “criminality” and “depravity.”
When asked by Welker how she would respond to critics who call her “hypocritical” for continuing to support Trump while holding this position on Jan. 6th prisoners, McDaniel said that her only choice is to “vote for the Republican” and that if it’s between Trump and Biden, she will stick with Trump.
McDaniel’s appearance on “Meet the Press” was her NBC debut as a new regular contributor to the network, which sparked internal conflict and protests from the primarily progressive media outlet. However, McDaniel’s time at NBC was short-lived, as she was let go only days later due to the severe backlash.
