(RepublicanNews.org) – Iranian officials have reportedly told the U.S. that Iran will refrain from a military response to a recent airstrike in Damascus that killed senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) if America can negotiate a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas.
According to a report from Jadeh Iran on Sunday, April 7th, an anonymous source, who the news outlet claims is an Arab diplomat, spoke with reporters and said Iran would not retaliate for an airstrike in Syria that the Syrian government and Iran blamed on Israel if the U.S. can secure a ceasefire in Gaza. The source added that if successful “in containing the situation,” it would “be a great success for the Biden administration” that can be built upon.
The report comes amidst the resumption of cease-fire negotiations in Cairo between Israel and Hamas and as the Jewish state prepares for a possible response from Iran to the airstrike in Syria.
U.S. officials have since denied the report. According to Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, Iran has “not sent that message” to America. Miller added that if the Middle Eastern nation “wants a cease-fire in Gaza,” then “they could press Hamas” to accept the current deal on the table for a cease-fire, considering they “have long supported Hamas.”
The airstrike, which occurred on Monday, April 1st, in Damascus destroyed the Iranian consulate and killed the main official overseeing operations in Syria as well as Lebanon, IRGC commander Mohammad Reza Zahedi. His deputy also perished in the attack, and several other officers.
Iran has since made several threats to respond harshly against Israel for the attack. Herzi Halevi, the Chief of Staff for the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) said they know “how to handle Iran” and are “prepared” for their response. Halevi also said the IDF is “operating in cooperation” with the U.S. and other partners in the region to prepare for potential retaliation.
