(RepublicanNews.org) – Former President Donald Trump made a third attempt to delay his criminal trial in New York over alleged hush money payments to adult actress Stormy Daniels. The judge quickly threw out his latest attempt to drag out the proceedings.
On Wednesday, April 10th, Trump’s legal team made another Hail Mary attempt to slow-walk the former president’s prosecution with an immediate stay request. The delay would give Trump and his team more time to get rid of Judge Juan Merchan, who they’ve unsuccessfully tried to have dismissed from the case multiple times.
Trump faces accusations of using Michael Cohen, a former lawyer now testifying against him, to pay Daniels (whose real name is Stephanie A. Gregory Clifford) ahead of the 2016 presidential election in exchange for her silence about an alleged affair. He was indicted in New York last year in March. Trump has denied the affair and pleaded not guilty to the 34 counts against him for allegedly falsifying business records.
Emil Bove, one of Trump’s attorneys, argued in the emergency hearing on Wednesday that Merchan “exceeded his authority” by denying the former president’s request to delay the hush money trial until a decision in the Supreme Court was made about his argument of presidential immunity, which is related to another case. Justice Ellen Gesmer denied the stay request.
Trump filed a lawsuit against Merchan on Monday, April 8th, to have him recused from the hush money trial. Although his case will be considered later this month by a panel of judges, it did not delay the beginning of the trial, which began yesterday on Monday, April 15th.
The former president, who is now the presumptive Republican nominee for the November general presidential election, is facing multiple legal battles on various fronts, such as for alleged election interference and charges of mishandling classified materials. Trump says these attacks amount to a weaponization of the legal system against him by his political opponents to try and keep him from returning to the White House in 2025.
