(RepublicanNews.org) – Former President Donald Trump made a campaign stop in Detroit, Michigan, for a roundtable discussion over the weekend, and one of the panel’s other participants noted that President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama “never came” to the city’s “hood.”
Trump paid a visit to Detroit on Saturday, June 15th, where he delivered a speech and then participated in a roundtable discussion with local black community leaders and small business owners. Among the participants was 180 Church senior pastor Lorenzo Sewell, who told the former president he was “humbled” by his visit.
Sewell then went on to note that Obama never bothered to visit the West Side neighborhood where the Saturday event took place. He also noted how Biden “never came to the hood” either, despite having attended a NAACP dinner nearby in the past. Sewell then thanked the former president for his attendance. Trump thanked Sewell in return, calling his remarks “really nice.”
Hundreds attended the event to see Trump speak. Amongst the guests were Sada Baby, a Detroit rapper, and the former police chief James Craig. Some of the lawmakers present included Republican Rep. John James of Michigan and Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida, who served as moderator for the roundtable discussion, which lasted about 20 minutes following Trump’s speech.
Among the topics covered by Trump, he discussed crime in the black community, which he said was “rampant.” Trump also criticized the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act sponsored by Biden, which many blame for unfair mass incarcerations of black Americans over the past thirty years.
The Michigan event was the latest effort by the former president to continue increasing his support amongst black voters, which has more than doubled over the last four years, particularly in battleground states like Michigan, where polls show him leading Biden by 0.3 points.
Last month, he held a rally in New York City in the Bronx, a borough not commonly visited by presidential candidates. Thousands turned out, some of them lifelong Democrats, to show support for Trump.
