(RepublicanNews.org) – President Joe Biden vowed to increase security for former President Donald Trump following the recent assassination attempt on the former president over the weekend.
After the assassination attempt on Trump during his speech at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Biden made a statement the following day condemning political violence. On Sunday, July 14, the president published his statement and called for heightened security for his opponent as the November election draws near, and for an overview of security protocols.
Trump narrowly dodged death that day as one of the bullets whizzed past his head and injured his ear. Before a Secret Service sniper took him out, the shooter managed to fire off eight rounds, killing one person sitting behind Trump and injuring two others.
Biden said he spoke with Trump after the failed assassination attempt and that he was “sincerely grateful” the former president was “doing well and recovering.” Biden said the two opponents had a brief conversation. He added that he and his wife were keeping Trump and his family in their prayers. The president also extended condolences to the family of the man killed during the incident, who was later identified as 50-year-old Corey Comperatore. Biden noted the victim was a father and that he died while “protecting his family from the bullets.”
Standing beside Biden and listening as he spoke were Vice President Kamala Harris, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Biden condemned the assassination attempt and said there was “no place in America” for such violence, which he said is “contrary to everything” the country stands for. The president also stressed a message of unity, even though many of his critics felt it was too little too late after spending his first term labeling conservatives and Trump supporters as “fascists.”
Biden said the FBI’s investigation was “still in its early stages.” He also said he directed the Secret Service to give Trump every resource, capability, and protective measure” he needs to remain safe. The president also said he directed the head of the agency to conduct a thorough review of all security protocols, the results of which he said would be shared with the public.
