(RepublicanNews.org) – In response to President Joe Biden’s poor debate performance last month, a former assistant U.S. attorney is calling for 25th Amendment hearings about the mental acuity and physical health of the president and how capable he is of carrying out his Executive duties.
Andy McCarthy, who is a regular contributor on Fox News, appeared on “Outnumbered” on Monday, July 1st, when he was asked about the president’s concerning behavior and poor first debate performance. Aside from some of his fumbles while speaking, Biden also appeared at moments to be confused and often stood with his mouth hanging open.
McCarthy said he believes the time has come to consider invoking the 25th Amendment, which would not only remove Biden from the race but from office entirely, allowing Vice President Kamala Harris to take over temporarily until the winner of the 2024 election is inaugurated in January 2025. The former U.S. attorney said that “when it comes to this issue” of a president’s health and ability to lead, he doesn’t “really care that much about the campaign.”
McCarthy noted his past career of prosecuting “jihadists” in the 1990s, comparing today’s “‘threat’ environment” to the years preceding the attacks on Sept. 11th, 2001. He said “today is reminiscent” of that time,” the only difference being that there wasn’t any major war in Europe or the Middle East. McCarthy called Biden “non compos mentis,” which is a Latin term that means “of unsound mind.”
Two days after the debate, GOP Rep. Chip Roy of Texas introduced an act urging Harris to gather Biden’s Cabinet executives and to jointly declare the president unfit to remain in office by activating section 4 of the 25th Amendment. This action would place Harris in charge as Acting President.
Following his dismal performance on CNN during the first debate, the pundits immediately started to suggest that Biden bow out of the race, and even Democratic lawmakers who formerly ignored his condition began calling for the same.
The day after the debate, Biden announced that he would not withdraw from the race. He acknowledged the impact of his advanced age on his speaking and debating abilities as well as his mobility but maintained that he still knows “how to tell the truth.”
