Man Attacks Passersby with a Sword, Killing Teenager

( – A deranged man in a northeast suburb of London went on a rampage with a sword, injuring four people, including law enforcement, and killing a teenager before he was able to be detained.

On Tuesday, April 30th, British authorities said a 36-year-old man attacked passersby with a sword in a residential suburb of London, near the Hainault subway station. Metropolitan Police responded to reports that a vehicle crashed into a home and that people were being stabbed. When they arrived on the scene, the man also attacked the officers, injuring two of them during a rampage that went on for 22 minutes.

Videos from witnesses showed the suspect wearing a yellow hoodie and brandishing a sword as he walked around residential homes in the area. Another video showed officers showing up to confront the suspect, telling him to “drop the sword” and other residents to lock their doors before chasing after the suspect, who could be seen scaling fences and running through gardens.

The killer fatally stabbed a 14-year-old boy with the bladed weapon, who later died in the hospital from his injuries. Two other victims suffered injuries, alongside two officers. Stuart Bell, the Chief Superintendent of the Metropolitan Police, addressed the incident during a press conference outside the homes where the attack occurred and called it “truly horrific.” Bell added he could not “even begin to imagine how those affected must be feeling.”

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan said the incident was not being treated as a terrorist-related incident or a “targeted attack” and that law enforcement does not believe any wider threat to the community exists. He said that no additional suspects were being pursued.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak commented on the attack, calling it “shocking” and proclaiming that “such violence” does not belong on England’s streets. Buckingham Palace said King Charles III sent his thoughts and prayers from the Royal Family to the victims’ families and also praised the emergency workers for showing such courage.
