Investigation Launched by House Committee

House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer is launching an investigation into Minnesota Governor Timothy Walz due to his connections to Chinese Communist Party (CCP) entities and officials. Sources indicate that this probe aims to uncover the depth of Walz’s engagements with China and assess potential national security implications.

Comer has requested information from FBI Director Christopher Wray, specifically regarding Walz’s connections with CCP-linked entities. This includes examining Walz’s extensive travel to China and his interactions with Chinese officials. Insight from the FBI will be crucial in determining whether Walz’s actions have compromised U.S. national integrity.

Concerns Over CCP Influence

Concerns are growing regarding CCP influence in Walz’s decision-making processes. Such influence would be particularly alarming given Walz’s possible ascension to the vice presidency. The investigation seeks to delineate whether Walz’s longstanding interactions with Chinese figures have unduly affected his governance priorities.

“The CCP has sought to destroy the United States through coordinated influence and infiltration campaigns that target every aspect of American life, including our own elected officials. Americans should be deeply concerned that Governor Walz, Kamala Harris’s vice-presidential running mate, has a longstanding and cozy relationship with China. Mr. Walz has visited China dozens of times, served as a fellow at a Chinese institution that maintains a devotion to the CCP, and spoke alongside the President of a Chinese organization the State Department exposed as a CCP effort to influence and co-opt local leaders. FBI briefers recently informed the Committee that the Bureau’s Foreign Influence Task Force investigates CCP activity that is similar to China’s engagement with Governor Walz. The American people deserve to fully understand how deep Governor Walz’s relationship with China goes,” said Chairman James Comer.

Other key figures, such as Sen. Marco Rubio and the Heritage Foundation, warn that Walz may be influenced by CCP efforts, further emphasizing the necessity of this investigation.

Walz’s Extensive Chinese Engagement

Walz has visited China numerous times and maintained long-term ties with Chinese officials and institutions. Notably, in 1993, he organized a trip to China for high school students, funded by the Chinese government, and later established a company coordinating student trips to China until 2003. This company was dissolved shortly after Walz took congressional office in 2007.

Investigators are also scrutinizing Walz’s fellowship at Macau Polytechnic University, a Chinese institution linked to the CCP, and his engagements alongside influential Chinese figures. Such interactions have raised alarms over potential CCP attempts to influence U.S. state governance.

“Throughout his career, Governor Walz has stood up to the CCP, fought for human rights and democracy, and always put American jobs and manufacturing first,” Walz’s campaign said in a statement.
