Incident Details
Officer Michael Horan of the Greensboro Police Department responded to a report of a man carrying a gun at the Food Lion supermarket. Upon arrival, Officer Horan confronted Tarell Isaac McMillian, 34, and an altercation ensued. Tragically, Officer Horan was shot and killed before he could even draw his service weapon. Tarell Isaac McMillian was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
Following the incident, McMillian attempted to flee the scene, leading officers on a pursuit that ended in Duplin County, about 150 miles from Greensboro. He was apprehended and currently remains in custody at Guilford County Jail without bond.

Community Response and Support
The Greensboro community, along with law enforcement across the state, is deeply affected by the loss of Officer Horan. Chief John Thompson stated, “We are all struggling with the tragic loss of Officer Michael Horan, who was a valued and respected member of our Greensboro Police family.” A memorial fund has been initiated to support Officer Horan’s family, and community support has been overwhelming.
The Greensboro Police Officers Association has raised tens of thousands of dollars through a memorial fund established in Horan’s honor. The Food Lion store where the incident occurred remains closed during the investigation, with the company providing support to its employees.

Remembering Officer Michael Horan
Officer Michael Horan joined the Greensboro Police Department in 2017, known for his bravery and dedication. In 2019, he was hailed a hero for saving a man and his son from a rip current in Emerald Isle. His commitment to public service also extended to the U.S. Coast Guard, where he served since 2000. Community members and officials remember him as a magnetic and professional individual.
