Top Democrat Contender Backs Kamala Harris

(RepublicanNews.org) – Upon dropping out of the 2024 presidential contest, President Joe Biden officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him as the incumbent Democratic nominee who will take on former President Donald Trump, and the endorsements from other lawmakers have been pouring in since.

On Sunday, July 21st, Biden announced he would step aside from the race and focus instead on completing his final months in office without seeking re-election. He then threw his weight behind Harris, who is now receiving endorsements from other notable Democrats. One of the most prominent is California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who called Harris “tough” and officially endorsed her after Biden’s announcement.

Newsom said the vice president was “tough,” “fearless,” and “tenacious.” He said that with “democracy at stake” and the future of the country “on the line,” he felt there was no one else better suited “to prosecute the case” against what he described as Trump’s “dark vision” than Harris. Newsom said she would guide the country into “a healthier direction.”

Newsom’s endorsement is interesting because many political commentators have speculated for months about whether or not Newsom himself would end up replacing Biden as the Democratic Party nominee, expecting Biden to drop out eventually. He remains one of the possible running-mate choices for Harris, though, among others who seem to be up for consideration, such as Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

When questioned earlier this month about possibly replacing Biden, Newsom dismissed the claims as “farcical” and said he would not challenge the vice president if she’s the preferred candidate. He called the notion that he would replace Biden a “non-sequitur” and said he did not “understand the context” of it.

Harris delivered her first remarks on Monday, July 22nd, since the announcement, before which Biden called into the conference by phone. Since departing Nevada after announcing a positive COVID test, the president landed in Delaware and hasn’t been seen since. Biden posted a message on Tuesday, July 23rd, and said he would address the nation from the Oval Office the following day.
