A Trump-backed conservative just defeated Colombia’s socialist-aligned candidate in a nail-biting runoff — and the left isn’t taking it quietly.
Story Highlights
- Abelardo de la Espriella, nicknamed “El Tigre,” won Colombia’s presidential runoff on June 21, 2026, beating leftist Ivan Cepeda by less than one percentage point.
- President Trump endorsed De la Espriella and publicly backed the election as important for Colombia’s future and its relationship with the United States.
- De la Espriella ran on a tough crime platform, promising to end talks with rebel groups, build ten mega-prisons, and shrink the size of government by up to 40%.
- Outgoing socialist President Gustavo Petro immediately cried foul, alleging “irregularities” at polling locations despite international observers calling the vote transparent and orderly.
A Razor-Thin Win With Big Consequences
Abelardo de la Espriella, a right-leaning lawyer with no prior government experience, edged out leftist senator Ivan Cepeda in Colombia’s June 21 runoff. Preliminary results showed De la Espriella with 49.66% of the vote to Cepeda’s 48.70% — a margin of less than one point. More than 26 million Colombians cast ballots, making it one of the highest-turnout presidential elections in the country’s history.
The first round had already signaled the shift. De la Espriella took 43.7% of the vote versus Cepeda’s 40.9%, setting up the tight runoff. International observers called election day transparent and orderly, with no major incidents reported. Turnout in the first round reached 57.88% — the highest ever recorded for a Colombian presidential election.
Trump Endorsement and a Law-and-Order Agenda
President Trump endorsed De la Espriella during the campaign and framed the race as critical for Colombia’s future and its ties with the United States. De la Espriella campaigned on a hard-line crime platform, promising to stop all negotiations with rebel groups and criminal organizations — a direct reversal of outgoing President Petro’s approach. He also pledged to build ten mega-prisons to deal with the country’s surging crime problem.
On the economy, De la Espriella promised to cut taxes, expand Colombia’s oil and gas industry, and reduce the size of the federal government by as much as 40%. He also said he would keep Petro’s 23% minimum wage increase, showing he is not looking to strip away every social measure — just the ones he sees as harmful. That mix of tough-on-crime and business-friendly policy drew strong support from voters tired of instability.
Cepeda Was the Left’s Best Hope — And He Lost
Ivan Cepeda was not just any opponent. He was the hand-picked successor of socialist President Gustavo Petro and the candidate of the Historic Pact, the left-wing coalition that has held power. Cepeda ran on continuing Petro’s constitutional reforms, increasing social spending, and redistributing land to poor communities. His defeat is a direct blow to that agenda and signals that Colombian voters wanted a different direction.

Petro did not accept the results gracefully. He alleged “irregularities” at polling stations, though no conclusive evidence of fraud has surfaced. About 426,000 blank ballots were cast, showing a slice of the electorate remains skeptical of both sides. De la Espriella will also face a fragmented Congress and heavy national debt, which could slow his reform agenda. Still, his win fits a bigger trend — five right-wing or conservative leaders have now been elected across Latin America in less than a year, from Costa Rica to Colombia, as voters across the region push back against the left.
