Understanding The 2nd Amendment

The 2nd Amendment -- Under Fire

(RepublicanNews.org) – The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution reads,

“[a] well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.”

Gun-control advocates tend to focus on the term “militia” in their efforts to disarm citizens.

A Prefatory Clause

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) decided in the case called District of Columbia v. Heller, that it’s a prefatory clause. Thereby they declared it nothing but an introduction to the amendment. They also stated militia should not equate with military service, noting that “… [when the Bill of Rights was established] the term referred to all able-bodied men who were capable of being called to such service.”

What the justices effectively did was make the right to own guns unassailable for law-abiding citizens — short of another constitutional amendment to repeal it.

Pandemic Era

In 2020, as the coronavirus spread, state after state issued so-called stay-at-home orders, essentially putting America on lockdown, allowing only “essential businesses” to stay open. Several states and localities did not consider gun shops to be essential. After a campaign by those who viewed this as a violation of their rights, the president intervened and declared the stores were indeed essential.

Protecting Our Homes

Depending on which side of the ideological gulf a person resides, they may see the people participating in recent protests, riots, and looting incidents as militant thugs presenting a clear and present danger to their families, which has motivated them to find a means of protection. Thanks to the president’s intervention, governors and mayors are no longer free to deny them a way in which to do so.

America is on the edge of a precipice. Will America remain the beacon of freedom the world sees, or will she become something else?
